VOLUNTEER IN VICTORIA

Get more out of your travels in Victoria. Register to work voluntarily during your visit and you could find yourself experiencing life on an Australian farm or getting involved with an Australian community.

Many students undertake voluntary work or work experience in Melbourne and regional Victoria during their studies, to develop their skills and gain an insight into the workforce as well as to make friends and learn new skills.

Why volunteer?
Volunteering is a great way to: contribute to the country you are visiting; meet new people, and understand local points of view. Volunteering can be very rewarding and may help you achieve some of your career or personal goals.

How do I find volunteer work? Do I need visas?
Do your research. Find out if there are costs, and the conditions of your placement. Check that you agree with the organisation's philosophy and that the organisation reflects your personal interests.

The visa type you need depends on the organisation you choose. Visitors from some countries do not require visas. Work undertaken as a volunteer or through volunteer schemes such Willing Workers on Organic Farms (WWOOF), may qualify for the additional year extension of the working holiday visa if the volunteer work falls under the "specified work" categories (e.g. fishing, tree farming or construction).

When you volunteer for Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), you will not technically be 'working', but volunteering your time instead. This means you pay for the cost of your meals and accommodation, just like any other holiday.

Are there opportunities to volunteer across Australia?
Yes, WWOOF has over 1,500 host properties throughout Australia. CVA has 25 offices across Australia.

Do I need any qualifications?
Usually no formal qualifications are needed. Volunteers must be reasonably fit, and certain skills and previous experience might be valuable for some tasks.

What sort of work is available?
WWOOF offers work on organic farms in exchange for meals and accommodation. At CVA, one needs to be prepared to get their hands dirty, as project activities can include trail maintenance in national parks, planting shrubs along sand dunes and weed removal.

Is it a good way to see the country?
Definitely! Conservation projects are underway in urban and remote locations, in national parks, nature reserves and wetland areas. You also get to interact with local communities and go to places that tourists normally don't get to see.

Are my living costs covered?
Volunteer organisations offer different arrangements for paying for your food and accommodation. WWOOF volunteers work for their keep. A single day volunteering with CVA doesn't cost anything (bring your own lunch). Accommodation packages from $30 per night are available for multi-day projects that involve travel.

Will I be trained?
Normally volunteers are trained on the job. CVA volunteer teams are accompanied by an experienced team leader who conducts on-site training in the use of tools, and flora and fauna identification. CVA is a registered training provider and offers a 'Certificate 1' in Active Volunteering.

What's the best thing about volunteer work in Oz?
Australia is a unique and beautiful country with spectacular landscapes and wildlife. As a volunteer you contribute to the protection of our precious environment for future generations to enjoy.
