Trams in Melbourne

Melbourne’s trams give the city character and provide a scenic way to explore the city and inner suburbs like Richmond, St Kilda and South Yarra. Trams run down the centre of the road on most of Melbourne’s major thoroughfares.

Services run regularly from 5am – midnight Monday to Thursday and till around 1.30am on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday, trams run 7am - 11pm. Many tram services link to bus and train routes.

How to travel on trams
Passengers can board trams at signposted stops displaying maps, route numbers and a timetable. Route numbers are also displayed on the front of the tram.

Tickets
Tickets called Metcards can be pre-purchased on Metlink’s website, at Premium Stations, on board trams and buses, at retail outlets displaying the blue Metcard sign or via the Metcard Helpline (1800 652 313).  A valid Metcard allows you to travel on all Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses.

Fares are based on time and distance, with metropolitan Melbourne divided into two zones. Ensure you have a valid ticket as failure to do so could lead to a fine. For more information about fares and ticketing visit the Metlink website. (hyperlink)

City Circle Tram
Distinctive burgundy and gold City Circle trams provide free and convenient travel to city sights and attractions, with an automated commentary announcing points of interest along the route.

Running along Flinders Street, Harbour Esplanade, Docklands Drive, La Trobe Street and Spring Street, a complete journey takes around an hour.

Trams run in both directions every 12 minutes from 10am-6pm Sunday to Wednesday and 10am-9pm from Thursday to Saturday (except Christmas Day and Good Friday). Note: The City Circle Tram is not wheelchair accessible.
