A record crowd of 653,860 attended Australian Open 2010. The attendance smashed the previous record by nearly 50,000 in a fortnight of tennis that dominated the world sporting spotlight and eclipsed many of the historical marks for the Grand Slam of Asia-Pacific. American Serena Williams won her fifth Australian Open title, defeating Justin Henin, and a dream final line up in the men’s draw saw world No.1 Roger Federer battling it out with world No.4 Andy Murray for the first Grand Slam title of the year. It couldn’t seem to get any bigger. But it does. But bigger and better? Not that long ago ‘The Wonderful World of Tennis’ was unveiled. Then Melbourne was duly recognized as the place ‘Where the world comes to play’ in 2008. So much so that Melbourne Park became ‘The world’s biggest stage’ in 2009. And a ticket to the Australian Open was in fact ‘Your ticket to the world’ for 2010. More tennis, more entertainment…a pulsating atmosphere that envelopes a city. You can feel the competitive tension soar. More than 500 of the world’s best arrive, prepare and begin. Each day thousands flock to see who will progress and bask for another day in global spotlight. Notch after notch, the pressure mounts and we are all entranced. Yet still they will find ways to scale new heights, to reach unthinkable goals. Because in 2011, the Australian Open is about to go to ‘A whole new level’!
